  5. National Law University, Jodhpur
  6. Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi
  7. The West Bengal National University of Juridicial Sciences, Kolkata
  8. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow
  9. Symbiosis Law School, Pune
  10. Dr BR Ambedkar College of Law, Visakhapatnam

Answer : Finally, after crossing all the hurdles of boards, entrance and counseling, you successfully land into your ‘destined’ law school. We have precisely used the term ‘destined’ over here because there are times when you don’t want to join a particular college but have no other options apart from it, and my dear friends life is all about unexpected things. So, below we have described certain things that are unique to a law school:

  1. CASES: Teaching in law school revolves around ‘cases’. Most of the teachers quote direct reference from different Supreme court, high court and district court cases. Initially, this is difficult for the students to adapt to this methodology. However with the passage of time, they start adapting to it. A well-stocked library comes to the rescue of the students as most of them prefer to read books in their free time to develop their understanding of the subject.
  2. MOOT COURTS: These are mock courts where students argue imaginary cases for practice. But this is one of the most fun-filled and loved exercise. Lawyers wait for it eagerly. There are inter-college national and international level moot competitions that take place during the course. This is one of the classic example of learning by doing. The simulated environment provides the students a feeler of the courts and they continue to hone their skills.
  3. PARLIAMENTARY DEBATING: This is the second most loved exercise at the law schools. They are often referred to as ‘PDs’ by the students. There are two parts to a Parliamentary debate – The Speakers, and the Adjudicators, both of whom are marked by the other. While this may seem strange at first, it’s only a matter of a few debates before one grabs the nuances of debating.

Both Moot courts and PDs help the students to develop their analytical and oratory skills. They understand the nuances and details of building an argument and putting them across in a right manner. Life of a budding lawyer revolves around Acts, Debates, Cases, Internships and placements, Moots, Research Papers, and Sports Fests. You will have to burn the midnight oil but at the same time you will equally enjoy the fests and inter college competitions.

Life in a law school can be truly described as the metamorphosis of a student from being an aspiring lawyer to an actual one.

Answer : Negative marking is one of the biggest roadblocks or speed breaker in your entrance examination journey. The main reason of introduction of negative marking in the entrance examinations was to weed out the people who believe in solving the questions merely on the basis of random guesses.  Be through with your basics of each subject to get hold of the correct answer.

Although there is no definitive strategy that can help you to completely do away with the negative markings, our experts have some tips that will help to minimize the negative marking.

*You must have heard about a famous phrase that says-First things first. It means important matters should be dealt with before other things. And in the scenario of an entrance examination, it is the questions. Ensure that you correctly solve and mark the answers of only those questions that you are confident about.

*Now focus on questions that you were unsure about. Read the questions carefully. Sometimes you can recollect the answers after you read them twice or thrice.

*In case, the question is completely alien to you, it’s better to leave that question rather than taking any chances. However, if you know even one answer, we suggest you to take a chance as there is a 25% probability of getting the correct answer. We won’t recommend you to attempt more than 20% of the questions based on guess work or elimination. An attempt more than this can hamper your rank. Make sure your take calculative risks.

Ensure that you devote quality time to read the questions carefully and understand them. Sometimes, the questions seem to be simple but they have a hidden twist to them. Let’s have a look at this question-

Question- If ‘JANUARY’ is ‘JULY’, ‘SEPTEMBER’ is ‘SEPTEMBER, ‘FEBRUARY’ is ‘AUGUST’ and ‘MARCH’ is ‘MAY’ then ‘AUGUST’ is ?

  1. June
  2. April
  3. May
  4. August

Solution- January has 7 Letters and 7th month is July.
September has 9 Letters and 9th month is September.
February has 8 Letters and 8th month is August.
March has 5 Letters and 5th month is may.
Hence, August is June
Since August has 6 Letters and 6th month is June.

  1. Try to build co-relations and decode the answer contextually. Let’s suppose the following question was there in the exam-

Question-Which of the following is the most likely antonym of ‘NOVICE’?

  1. Veteran
  2. Beginner
  3. Learner
  4. Newbie

Solution- Let’s presume that you don’t know the answer of this question. Begin by looking at the option carefully. After looking at the options, we can decode that Beginner, learner and newbies sound like/ are synonyms of each other. This means the only remaining option ‘Veteran’ should be the answer.  And voila! Veteran is the correct answer as it means ‘a person who has had long experience in a particular field.’

*Read each and every option carefully. There may be cases where the options are confusing and in a hurry to mark the answer you select the wrong one. Let’s have a look at this question-

Question-What does ‘FIR’ stand for under the Criminal Law?

  1. Forensic Investigation Report
  2. First Investigation Report
  3. First Information Report
  4. Formal Interrogation Report

Solution- This is an easy question. However, the second and third options are overlapping with a difference of just one word.

The correct answer is- First Information Report

*In case of negatively worded questions (Which of the following are not) or questions having ‘All except’ use a True/ Yes or False/No beside each option, then simply select the odd option.

Let’s have a look at this question-

Question-Which of the following are not listed under the eighth schedule of Indian Constitution?

  1. Hindi
  2. Bengali
  3. Dogri
  4. English

Solution- We can solve the question simply by the following technique-

  1. Hindi-I
  2. Bengali-I
  3. Dogri-I
  4. English-NI

In this case, I stands for Included and NI stands for Not included. Thus, the correct answer will be-English.

*Lastly maintain your calm and do not panic. Don’t take the examination stress and anxiety take a toll over you. Believe in yourself and your hard work.
