BRIEF BACKGROUND

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences was established under the WBNUJS Act, 1999.  It is recognized under the UGC Act, 1956 in August 2004 and has been granted permanent affiliation by the Bar Council of India in July 2005. The university's present-day permanent campus was inaugurated by the then Chief Justice of India, B. N. Kirpal. The NUJS, Kolkata, along with the GNLU and NLSIU, Bengaluru, remain the only three national law schools which have the honorable Chief Justice of India as the Chancellor.

LOCATION

The WB National University of Juridical Sciences is situated in the Salt Lake City, Kolkata.  The campus is serviceable by all means of public transport except tram and metro. The distance from different modes of transit are

  1. Bus Stop: Beliaghata Bus Stop (0.2 kms)
  2. Airport: Netaji Subash Bose International Airport (13 kms, approx. 20 mins)
  • Railway Station: Sealdah Station (4.7 kms, 10 mins), Howrah Station (11 km, approx. 30 mins)

 

MODE OF ADMISSION

The admission to the National Law School Bangalore happens through a Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). Each year, the CLAT is conducted in the month of May and consists of objective type questions of a standard expected of 10+2 students and will be of 2 hours’ duration.  The test is divided into five sections mainly- Verbal Ability, General Awareness, Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning and Legal Aptitude. The test will carry a maximum of 200 marks. NLSIU offers a five years integrated B.A.LLB.

The criteria for negative marking is based on the formula 0.25*4=1 that means per wrong answer 0.25 Marks will be deducted. Therefore, four wrong answers will lead to deduction of 1 Mark.

If more than one candidate gets the same rank in the merit list, the order of priority for the selection of the candidate against the available vacancies will be strictly based on the percentage of marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

 

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION TO BA.LLB (Hons)

A candidate for admission to the B.A./B.Sc. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Course shall have:

  1. Passed the Higher Secondary School Examination (10+2) system or an examination equivalent thereto securing in the first attempt, not less than 50% (45% in case of SC / ST candidates and persons with disability) in the aggregate, and
  2. Not completed 20 years of age as on 1st July of the year of admission. In the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST and persons with disability, the maximum age limit shall be 22 years.
  • Those who do not clear the qualifying examination with the requisite marks are not eligible for admission. Candidates whose Statement of marks of the qualifying examination is not available at the time of formal interviews, are also not eligible for admission.

Based on the previous year trends, the ideal score for a candidate to get through to NLSIU in CLAT 2020 should be between 140-150.

 

DURATION & ACADEMIC TERMS

  • The duration of the course shall be for a period of Five Academic Years.
  • Each academic year is divided into two semesters and ten semesters in all.
  • Class timings usually range from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm with Sundays off.

 

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • There is an academic block named-BR Ambedkar, which is named after BR Ambedkar. It is a four-storied majestic edifice in stone, having 105 rooms comprising the class rooms, seminar halls, conference rooms, moot court halls. The classrooms are fully air-conditioned with smart podiums, projectors and e-learning facilities.
  • It has a well-stocked library where students can access national, international journals. The library is fully air-conditioned and has high-speed computers and workstations for students.
  • There is a Gymnasium and recreation room inside the campus. The recreation room is fully equipped for billiards, table tennis, table football, chess and carrom. It is open for 24 hours.
  • The in-house doctor is available for consultation from Monday to Friday between 5 to 6 pm. Medicines are deliverable to the hostel 24 hours from the nearest Frank Ross Pharmacy outlet.
  • Trained psychologists and student counsellors are also available for counselling sessions and consultations during the weekends.

HOSTEL SERVICES

  • The University has two hostels: boys and girls. In addition to that, one two-storied residential flat have also been made available for the students. Each hostel comprises of seven floors. There are single, double and triple sharing rooms on every floor of the hostel.
  • By general practice, first years are allotted triple sharing rooms according to their roll numbers received upon admission.
  • Services in the hostel include security, dual elevators, room cleaning, hot and cold water for bathing, microwaves and water-coolers on every floor. The television with music system is hosted in the common area and live-screens every major event and sports tournament.
  • LAN ports are available in every room for quick internet connectivity with speed ranging upto 54 mbps.
  • For laundry facility, the campus has a U-Wash outlet which is equipped with multiple washing
  • Machines and dryers and offers washing, ironing and dry-wash services on payment basis.

 

FEE STRUCTURE for 2019-20

  • The fees structure for BA/BSc LLB will be Rs 2,91,400 for the first year followed by 276,900 for the subsequent four years.
  • The total fees for the five year program is approx.14 lakhs.

RANKINGS IN INDIA

According to National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF), West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences has a score of 63.94 and is at the sixth rank. The NIRF is a ranking adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. The Rankings are based on “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.

The average annual salary package offered by Foreign Law Firms ranges from INR 42-46 lacs. Domestic Law Firms offered a salary package of INR 15-18 lacs per annum. The salary package of in-house counsel ranges from INR 15- 18 lacs per annum
