NATIONAL LAW SCHOOL OF INDIA UNIVERSITY 3YEAR LLB PROGRAMME

The National Law School of India University, Bangalore released the NLSAT 2023 application form on January 16, 2023, online mode. Eligible candidates can fill and submit the NLSAT 2023 application form online from the examination portal –

NLSAT 2023 Highlights

IMPORTANT DATES

The NLSAT-LLB will be held on April 30, 2023, in centers across the country. Application forms for the programme are available on NLSIU’s website (www.nls.ac.in). Application fees of Rs. 2500 (Two thousand five hundred only) shall be payable at the time of submission of the applications. Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PWD/EWD category shall be required to pay Rs. 2000 (Two Thousand only). Applications shall be accepted till 11:59:59pm on April 6, 2023.

The final admissions list will be published by the first week of June 2023. Classes will commence from July 1, 2023.

The syllabus for the NLSAT-LLB will be available on the website of the university. Fees and other program details are also available on the university’s website. NLSAT-LLB will be held in several centers across the country. The list of centers is available on the applications portal. 

Eligibility

Any person holding a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized national or international university is eligible to apply to the programme. Applicants in the General category should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 45% of total marks. Applications in the SC/ST/OBS-NCL/PWD Category should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 40% of total marks. Students in the final year of their Bachelor’s degree are also eligible to apply. However, their final offer of admission shall be contingent upon the successful completion of their Bachelor’s degree with the minimum aggregate marks specified above. Proof of completion of the qualifying degree has to be submitted no later than December 31, 2023.

NLSAT 2023 Syllabus

The NLSAT 2023 Written Test shall be for 140 marks, of which 75 marks shall be for objective type MCQs, and 65 marks shall be for subjective questions. NLSAT Part A will consist of Multiple-Choice Questions and shall be for a maximum of 75 marks. 0.25 marks shall be deducted for every wrong answer. Part B shall consist of subjective questions which shall be for a maximum of 65 marks.

Part A:

• Applicants will be tested on the following in the objective test:
• English comprehension (25 marks)

• Critical Reasoning (including logical reasoning and legal aptitude) (25 marks)

Part B:

• The syllabus for the subjective test is as follows:
• Legal Aptitude/Reasoning (50 marks): Legal aptitude will consist of problem-based questions to which short answers will be sought. Prior knowledge of the law is not expected. This section will have 10 questions of 5 marks each.
• Current Affairs (15 marks): Current affairs shall consist of one essay of no more than 500 words. Students shall be required to answer one of three options. Applicants will be tested on their knowledge of the issue, the ability to make convincing written arguments, and write a well-structured essay. Knowledge of the law is not expected.

Subject - Wise Marks

ADMISSIONS PROCESS 

The total intake capacity is 120 for the 3-year LL. B (HONS.) programme in the Academic year 2023-24. Admission to the programme will be through an all-India written admissions test, the national Law School Admission Test (NLSAT-LLB).

NLSAT- LLB

All candidates seeking admission to the programme shall appear for the NLSAT-LLB. The NLSAT-LLB will have a single question paper comprising two parts- parts A and B. All candidates shall be required to attempt both parts of the question paper. The examination shall be for a duration of 150 minutes.

PART-A

Part A will consist of multiple-choice questions and shall be for a maximum of 75 marks. 0.25 marks shall be deducted for each wrong answer, and for each unanswered question. Part A will constitute the first stage of the admissions process. A rank list of candidates will be prepared based on their performance in part A of the NLSAT- LLB. 

Candidates will have to fulfill the following requirements in part A to be eligible for evaluation of Part B of the NLSAT-LLB:

1. Candidates should have secured more than zero marks in Part A of the NLSAT- LLB
2. Candidates seeking admission in the General/EWS categories must secure a score above the 75^th percentile in part A. Candidates seeking admission in the SC/STOBC- NCL/PWD categories must secure a score above the 50^th Percentile in Part A.

From amongst eligible candidates, Part B of the answer scripts will be evaluated in a ratio of1:5 based on performance in part A. That is, five candidates per seat available will qualify for evaluation of part B of the examination.

PART B

Part B shall consist of subjective questions which shall be for a maximum of 75 marks. A fresh and final rank list shall be prepared based on the cumulative performance in parts A and B of the NLSAT-LLB Offers of admission shall be made according to this final rank list.

To be offered admission, a candidate has to satisfy the following conditions:

1. The candidate should have secured more than zero marks in both Parts A and B of the NLSAT- LLB.
2. A candidate seeking admission in the General Category/ EWS category must secure a score above the 75^th percentile in parts A and B of the NLSAT-LLB, as well as in the aggregate score of parts A and B. A candidate seeking admission in the SC/ST/OBC- NCL/PWD category must secure a score above the 50^th percentile in both parts A and B respectively of the NLSAT-LLB, as well as in the aggregate score of parts A and B.

Note: The applicable reservations policy shall be applied at each stage of the admissions process.  

INTAKE AND RESERVATION

The total number of seats available is 120 (one hundred and twenty). Seats shall be reserved as follows:

5% of the total intake is reserved horizontally for persons with disabilities (PWD); 30% of the total intake is reserved horizontally for women, and 23% of the total intake is reserved horizontally (compartmentalized) for Karnataka students.

Karnataka Students Category:

1. Candidates who have studied for not less than 10 years in a recognized educational institution in Karnataka shall be considered as ‘Karnataka Students.’
2. Candidates who have not completed ten years of study in Karnataka shall be eligible to apply under the Karnataka student’s category if they fall under any of the below categories:
3. Children of defense personnel/ex-servicemen, who at the time of joining service, have declared their hometown to be in the state of Karnataka, and who have served or are serving outside Karnataka, corresponding to the candidate’s years of study outside Karnataka.
4. Children of employees of the Karnataka state Government who have served or are serving outside Karnataka corresponding to the candidate's years of study outside Karnataka.
5. Children of serving retired employees belonging to the Karnataka cadre of the all-India services (IAS/IFS/IPS), who have served or are serving outside Karnataka corresponding to the candidate’s years of study outside Karnataka.
6. Children of working or retired employees in the central Armed police Force service, who upon joining service declared their hometown to be in the state of Karnataka, and who served or are serving outside Karnataka, corresponding to the candidate’s years of study outside Karnataka.

Illustration: If the candidate has studied in Karnataka for three (3) years, they must prove that their Parent/s were serving outside Karnataka for at seven (7) years corresponding to their own period of study outside Karnataka.

If the candidate has not studied in Karnataka continuously for at least one (1) year, they must prove that their parent/s were serving outside Karnataka for at least ten (10) years corresponding to their own period of study Outside Karnataka.

3. Eligible Candidates must keep their study certificates issued by their educational institutions and other relevant documents ready to be submitted at the time of admission.

 Know the Exam

To be able to crack tough nuts like NLSAT. you should know the in and out of the exam. Understanding the examination, question paper pattern, syllabus, difficulty level, etc can stand you in good stead. It will not only prepare you for the eventual test up ahead but also play a crucial role in helping you implement effective strategies to handle the exam well.

Time Management is the Key

It is rightly said that time and tide wait for none. Those, who understand the value of time, manage to stand apart from the crowd. Effective time management plays a pivotal role in augmenting your productivity. It helps tasks seem less daunting and keeps you organized. Managing your time well boosts self-confidence, helps set priorities and reduces stress levels. Apart from that, it also helps make the best use of the available time, thereby leaving time for recreational activities.

Understand the Concepts

Good command of the subject is necessary to ace the exam. You should have a deep understanding of the subject and should be thorough with the theoretical aspects. In addition to that, you should focus on the concepts. Conceptual clarity helps one learn things easily and retain the information for a long. It is rightly said, the race is half-won if your fundamentals and concepts are clear. Therefore, it is advisable to understand the concepts before you learn them.

Inculcate Note-Taking Habit

One of the essential habits that you need to inculcate from day one is note-taking. This will not only help you keep pace and understand your lectures in a better way but will also keep your mind alert and attentive during the class. Note-taking is definitely one of the best ways to keep your mind engaged. In addition, make your own notes while studying to give an extra boost to your learning. They can be of great help during the crucial time before the exam. Just a glance over your notes will help you recall whatever you have learned.    

Study Every Day

Studying every day by setting short-term goals not only helps you keep pace with your lessons but also keeps you organized. It further reduces your efforts and you won’t feel the pressure during the examinations. On the other hand, procrastinating your learning only adds to your burden. Therefore, do not sum up your tasks as it reduces efficiency and increases pressure. Instead, whatever is taught in the class, follow it at home in order to improve the intensity of learning.

Know Your Weaknesses

Identifying your weaknesses right in the beginning can help you know where you stand, what your abilities are, and how much effort you need to put in to reach the top. Your weaknesses are neither your downfall nor something that you lack, but what you need to develop and build. Knowing your pitfalls gives you an opportunity to work on them and improve your performance.

Never Give-Up

True, life throws numerous challenges at you. But if you learn to cope up, no problem or situation is so big that you lose faith in your abilities and think of giving up. Also, you should keep in mind that within every struggle lays an opportunity to succeed. You should thus keep pushing yourself and keep trying until you succeed. Under no circumstances should you ever think of quitting. Learn to take every difficulty as an opportunity in disguise and always remember that nothing is impossible if you have the courage and willpower to do it.
